Christmas came a couple of days early for the right-of-center National Alliance (NA) political grouping with the latest Latvian Television party polls, conducted by the SKDS research agency, showing them to be the most popular party in the country in December.
If elections were held tomorrow, 9.9% of voters said they would vote for the opposition National Alliance.
In second place is another opposition party, the populist Latvia in first Place on 8.6% support, and third place is held by the New Unity party of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa which continues to shed support. Its rating in December was 6.7%.
Another coalition member, the Progressives, are in fourth with 6.1% and in December, the opposition United List (4.7%), whose rating has increased slightly, has overtaken the Green and Farmers’ Union (ZZS) on 4,6%.
Next comes For Stability! on 4.3% and Harmony on 3.9% before all the smaller parties, none of which muster more than 3% support.
However, as ever the support for the parties should be accompanied by a massive caveat: more than 30% of voters say they are undecided and more than 12% say they simply wouldn’t participate in elections at all.
So the main conclusion is that the ratings of opposition parties are rising, while those of the parties forming the coalition government are falling – not an unusual mid-term scenario.
