If the government led by Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) falls, the National Alliance is ready to form a new government, said Ilze Indriksone, a member of the Saeima who will most likely soon become the leader of the National Alliance, in an interview on the Latvian Television program Morning Panorama on December 5.

Asked whether the National Alliance would be ready to join the government if the composition of the current coalition changed, Indriksone replied that the National Alliance was ready to form a new government.

“If this government falls, we are not prepared to prop it up in the event of a change in the current government. You can’t bring down a government from the outside, someone may leave or not be able to get along. We are ready to form a new government if this government falls,” Indriksone said.

Asked to clarify whether the National Alliance would be ready to take over the leadership or just participate in the coalition, Indriksone said: “In this scenario, we would meet and agree on a prime ministerial candidate.”

“If this government falls, we must be able to take responsibility and form a government together with the United List,” Indriksson said.

The government led by Evika Siliņa, which is made up of New Unity, the Greens and Farmers Union and Progressives, has a fragile majority in parliament. From time to time, there is talk of possible changes    in the coalition, and the Prime Minister herself has not ruled out a change of ministers.

When Siliņa’s government was formed, both the National Alliance and the United List were given the opportunity to participate, but both political forces refused.
