Midweek mix: Strauss in Rēzekne and a harrowing historic drama

It’s the middle of the working week and winter appears to have a made an unwelcome, if hopefully temporary, return. So once again we have raided the LSM archives to find a few items you might want to divert you from the chilly blast outside.

April 4 saw Latvian Radio 3 broadcasting live from the GORS concert hall in Rēzekne with a concert by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Tarmo Peltokoski, featuring Kaija Sāriaho’s opus  Laterna Magica  and Richard Strauss’s epic Alpine Symphony.

Director Viesturs Kairišs’ acclaimed film is based on the moving memoir “On the banks of the Veļupe” by writer Melanija Vanaga and tells the harrowing story of her experiences during deportation to Siberia by the Soviets in 1941. Despite everything she survived to write down what she experienced and so that future generations would not forget.

Filming took place in Latvia (Riga, Biksti, Pasienė, Rēzekne) and in Russia, in Karelia, where the Siberian scenes were shot. Unfortunately this LTV broadcast version does not include English subtitles, but the stark black and white cinematography speaks for itself.
