Latvians arrested in Italy over international cigarette smuggling attempt

On Saturday, May 10, two Latvian citizens were detained at Italy’s Fiumicino airport in connection with a suspected attempt to smuggle a large number of cigarettes from Uzbekistan to Italy via Turkey. 

BAfter evaluating information based on risk indicators, the Latvian State Border Guard, in cooperation with their Italian counterparts and the airlines Uzbekistan Airways and Turkish Airlines, identified two Latvian citizens who were planning to illegally transport excise goods from Uzbekistan to Italy in transit through Turkey.

Information about the individuals was transferred to the Fiumicino Airport Air Border Police Office of the Italian Police, which on Saturday evening detected two Latvian citizens entering Fiumicino from Istanbul as predicated with smuggled cigarettes.

In total, Italian officials removed 80,000 Sobranie and Marlboro brand cigarettes from the suitcases and backpacks of the individuals in question.

Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the individuals for smuggling in accordance with the laws of the Italian Republic, the Latvian State Border Guard said.
