Eleven traffic organisation improvement projects are planned to be fully completed or started on the national road network this year, “Latvijas Valsts ceļi/Latvian State Roads” (LVC) said in a statement on 9 April.
The total investment will be more than EUR 13 million, of which EUR 7.5 million will be co-financed by the European Union (EU).
This year, seven locations on the national road network are to be equipped with infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, four of them with EU co-financing:
Two junctions are also planned for reconstruction this year. The junction of the Vidzeme motorway (A2) and the regional motorway P27 (Smiltene junction) will be improved with lighting and a new exit ramp from Rīga to Gulbene. At the intersection of regional roads P8 and P4 in Suntazi, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, public transport stops and a bridge over the Abze river will be improved.
This year, construction will also start on two two-level crossings: a tunnel for road, pedestrians, and cyclists will be built under the Jelgava motorway (A8) at Branki, and a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists under the Bauska motorway in Riga will be built in Krustkalni.
The tunnel in Krustkalni is scheduled to start in 2025 and drivers will have to take traffic restrictions into account this year and in 2026. The tunnel will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road safely and without disrupting the heavy traffic flow. The Bauska highway is one of the busiest roads in the region, with a traffic volume of between 13,000 and 30,000 vehicles per day.
This year, work is also continuing on the expansion of the average speed control network – last year, 17 new average speed control links were connected and supported, and the procurement and installation of the equipment is currently underway. Seven tenderers have submitted bids. All 17 new sections are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
