Former Prime Minister and MP Krišjānis Kariņš has decided to resign from the board of the party “Unity” because he no longer supports the party’s policies, Kariņš said on social media X.

In his statement, Kariņš does not comment on whether he has also left the ranks of the party’s members.

He writes that “it is a grave mistake to cut future pension contributions and to seriously raise the tax for capital savers.”

The Ministry of Finance, under the leadership of New Unity politician Arvils Ašeradens, has promoted amendments to the Law on State Funded Pensions, which provide for 1% of the second tier of the funded pension scheme to be transferred to the first tier of pensions over the next four years. The Saeima approved these changes.

In June this year, Kariņš was replaced as Chairman of the Board of the party association New Unity by his successor as Prime Minister, Unity Board Member Evika Siliņa. In 2013, the Unity party formed the New Unity alliance, which was joined by the Kuldīga Region, Valmiera and Vidzeme Tukums City and Region, Jēkabpils Regional Party and Latgale Party parties.

Kariņš quit politics this year in the wake of the private flights scandal.
