Travellers who have been crossing the River Daugava via the Southern Bridge (Dienvidu tilts) for the last decade might be surprised to learn that the construction project of which it is the centerpiece is still not complete.
However, that is set to be put right with the annoucement that construction work on the fourth and final phase of the Southern Bridge has begun – despite the fact that it is now winter, when major construction works are generally on hold.
The area around Jāņa Čakstes gatve and related infrastructure will be built in the section from Valdeķu Street to Ziepniekkalnas Street and in the section from Vienības gatve to Valdeķu Street. The construction work will cost more than 122 million euros and is scheduled to be completed only in 2027.
During the work, long-term traffic restrictions are likely, which the municipality will inform about separately, the city council’s Outdoor Space and Mobility Department stated.
In the section of Jāņa Čakstes gatve from Valdeķu Street to Ziepniekkalnas Street, main streets and overpasses will be constructed, including connections and local street access roads and their overpasses, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and pedestrian tunnels near Līvciema Street and near Padures Street.
