As expected, the greatest competition for seats is expected in Rīga, where 743 people from 16 lists are running for 60 seats.

More than 300 lists have been submitted for the local elections which will be held across Latvia on June 7, according to the Central Election Commission (CVK).

Tuesday was the last day for political forces to submit their candidate lists and by 6 p.m., when the submission of lists closed, information about 340 lists with 5,975 candidates in total was available on the CVK website – though this number is likely to rise further as unlike the Saeima or European Parliament elections, lists for these elections are submitted to local election commissions and then aggregated by the CVK.

In all, 731 local council seats will be decided. Almost two-thirds of the candidates are male, the average age of the candidates is slightly over 47 years old, the youngest candidate is 18 years old, and the oldest is 88, according to data available on Tuesday evening.
