The General Assembly of Senators of the Supreme Court has decided to nominate the current President of the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupišs, for confirmation by the Parliament for a second term, according to the Court’s information on 14 April.

17 out of 33 senators voted in favour of Strupišis.

Three candidates were nominated for the post of President of the Supreme Court – the current President of the Supreme Court Strupišs, Senator Rudīte Vīduša of the Senate Department of Administrative Affairs and Senator Aldis Laviņš of the Senate Department of Civil Cases. After interviewing the candidates, the Judicial Council found them all suitable for the post.

The Saeima, which confirms the President of the Supreme Court for five years, will have to decide on the confirmation of Strupišs. The same person may not hold office for more than two consecutive terms.

Strupišs’ first term will end on 15 June.
