We predict a riot

Members of the public are being reassured that if they happen to see – or more likely hear – a riot in progress in northern Rīga on Friday, it’s nothing to worry about.

On April 25, the intimidatingly-titled National Armed Forces Military Police crowd control exercise “Iron Wall” will take place in Riga at the Biķernieki racetrack complex “with the aim of training and improving the mutual cooperation between the Military Police and the Ministry of the Interior’s subunits in the performance of joint tasks.”

The exercise will also involve the State Police, the State Police College, the Fire Safety and Civil Protection College, the Prison Administration, the Riga Municipal Police, and well as the Riga Medical College of the University of Latvia.

“Such inter-agency exercises significantly improve understanding of the role of units and various institutions in the performance of common tasks and make an invaluable contribution to comprehensive national defense, ensuring the safety of civilians,” said a release.

During the training period from 08:00 to 16:00 loud music, slogans, shouting, as well as sound flares and smoke grenades are planned to be used. After the training, the area will be cleaned up and left in its original condition.
