Ukraine acts to increase protection of ammunition depots after one in flames

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has tightened security at ammunition depots and arsenals across Ukraine, Ukrainian news agency UNIAN reported.

On Tuesday, October 9, about 10,000 people were taken to safety after a fire and explosions hit a Ukrainian Defence Ministry ammunition depot 176 kilometres to the east of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv early on Tuesday.

In the morning of Wednesday, October 10, emergency services were still working to eliminate the emergency situation at the 6th arsenal near the town of Ichnya in Chernihiv region.

«By order of Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Gen. Viktor Muzhenko, the security and defense of ammunition depots and arsenals for storing ammunition have been strengthened across Ukraine,» stated the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The cause of the fire at the ammunition depot has not yet been established.
