Swine fever found in pig farm near Tukums, Latvia

An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has been detected in a small farm with 36 pigs in Džūkste parish, Tukums municipality. This is the first case of ASF detected in domestic pig holdings in Latvia this year, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) said.

All pigs in the holding will be eliminated to curb the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease.

A quarantine zone is established around the ASF-affected holding. 

The PVD pointed out that the biggest threat to the health of domestic pigs is wild boar. This year, 756 wild boar have already been diagnosed with ASF in Latvia.

The only thing that can protect domestic pigs from contracting this deadly virus is strict biosecurity on the farm. Biosecurity means simple precautions that must be followed on a daily basis:
