A section of Tērbatas Street has been closed to traffic since the weekend – the cause is a sunken carriageway surface, possibly caused by an adjacent construction site. Construction work is currently suspended until the circumstances are fully clarified, Latvian Television reports on 14 April.
The construction site in the area of the former Sports Palace is currently quiet and deserted. Before work can continue, experts will need to establish whether the site poses a danger to the adjacent street and possibly also to the neighbouring houses on Tērbatas Street.
Since the weekend, traffic on the section of Tērbatas Street between Artilērijas and Lielgabalu Streets remains closed. Residents have also had to move cars parked on the roadside. According to the authorities in charge, the cause of the problem is probably related to a wall built in a nearby construction site where a new apartment complex is being built.
“After these causes are identified and clarified, further decisions will be taken on resuming construction work or making any adjustments,” said Aija Meļņikova, Deputy Head of the Architecture Department at Riga City Council.
After the construction work was stopped, the project’s builder, Selva būve, said that no more sinking has happened. Residents of nearby buildings have felt the construction work quite thoroughly and are also worried about the fate of their homes.
Andrejs, a resident of the building next door: “When the work was going on here, the whole house was shaking with… All the objects just falling off the table onto the floor. I don’t know how it’s going to be.”
Māris Šustiņš, a representative of Designers 5: “We have an art concept store. In the showcases, the jewellery on the trays is all glass… Every hour it was like from one side of the showcase to the other. It was like turbulence.”
Meanwhile, Māris Kreicers, project manager at Selva būve, pointed out that any construction work causes inconvenience for residents, whether it’s sound, vibration or dust.
The builder predicted that it could take about a week to find out more about what was really to blame for the sinking.
Until this is clarified, vehicle traffic will not be restored on the stretch.
