Last week, epidemiologists found that the Straupe dairy company had supplied milk products to kindergartens where cases of E. coli had been detected. For safety reasons, the operation of one of the company’s packing lines was suspended and products were withdrawn. Now the line has been restored and retailers promise to resume cooperation with the company in the coming days, Latvian Radio reported on 15 April.
On Tuesday, 15 April, in the middle of the day, there were not many people in the sales area of the dairy corporation “Straupe” at the Riga Central Market. The seller also admitted that the number of buyers had decreased significantly in recent days.
However, most of the people who came to the market said that they had bought and would continue to buy Straupe’s products because they did not consider the situation in which Straupe’s employees were found to be infected with the dangerous E. coli bacteria to be a reason to boycott the local company.
Retailers Elvi Latvija SIA and Rimi Latvia SIA have completely suspended the sale of products of the Straupe dairy cooperative, as the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) had temporarily partially restricted the cooperative’s activities after detecting cases of enterohaemorrhagic E. coli infection in the company’s employees.
Now, both Inga Bite, a representative of Rimi Latvia, and Laila Vārtukapteine, a board member of Elvi Latvija, informed Latvian Radio that Straupe’s products will be back on the shelves within this week. However, people have not turned to the stores to request a refund for the purchased “Straupe” products, although this possibility exists until 25 April.
Iveta Dzērve, a representative of “Straupe”, told Latvian Radio that the company has resumed production with a full start, but it will take about a week to estimate the losses. However, she pointed out that the losses would not be critical for the future of the company, but it would have to recover from the financial and reputational losses.
