The weather in Latvia will be windy and rainy on New Year’s Eve and day, but frost and snow will return after the holidays, according to the latest forecast prepared by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LVĢMC).

The new week will start with clouds, rain, and strong, gusty winds. The air will gradually cool on Monday afternoon and turn colder in the east.

On Tuesday, the last day of the year, the weather will be mostly cloudy, with only a few patches of sunshine breaking through the clouds. The first half of New Year’s Day will not be too wet, but by the afternoon a new and widespread precipitation area will reach Latvia, bringing both more intense rain and snow, with long-lasting precipitation and occasional showers.

The weather conditions will make driving difficult, with slippery roads and significantly reduced visibility during the precipitation and blizzard conditions. Snow cover up to five centimeters (cm) thick will start to form in places in the east. Moderate south-westerly, westerly winds gusting up to 15-19 meters per second (m/s) will continue.

During the night of January 1, the air temperature will range from 4 C in Kurzeme to -4 C in Vidzeme.

On Wednesday, New Year’s Day, there will be no significant change in the weather. It will continue to rain in many places, with wet snow and even proper snow in the east, so the New Year’s morning will start a little whiter there. Winds will start to pick up again. It will be gusty across the country, gusting to 20-24 m/s along the coast and 25 m/s during the day. The air will warm up to 2 C to 7 C.

Forecasts at the moment suggest that colder air will flow into Latvia after the holidays – frost will return and the thermometer could even dip below -10 degrees on some nights, and you will have to dress much warmer during the day.

Rain will give way to snow, so the ground will be white in many places, forecasts the LVĢMC.
