Sigulda municipality triples childbirth allowance

Sigulda Municipality has significantly increased the childbirth allowance in 2025. From now on, residents of Sigulda Municipality will be able to receive one of the largest newborn allowances in Latvia, LSM.lv reports. This comes ahead of this year’s municipal elections across Latvia.

The benefit for the birth of one child will be EUR 1,000 instead of the current EUR 350, and EUR 2,000 for the birth of twins (previously EUR 480). If three or more children are born in the same family, the amount of the allowance will be determined by the local council.

To receive the full amount of the allowance, both parents must have been declared residents in Sigulda Municipality at least 12 months before the birth of the child, and the newborn must be declared a resident in Sigulda Municipality. If only one parent and the newborn are declared in the municipality, the benefit is granted at 50%.

Although the changes to the binding rules only came into force in mid-April, the amount of the benefit will be applied from 1 January this year, with a recalculation for those families who have already received the newborn allowance to ensure that the difference is paid. For example, if a family has a baby at the beginning of 2025 and has received a benefit of €350, an additional €650 will be paid to the family after the recalculation to make up the new benefit amount.

In the election year, several municipalities decided to increase childbirth and other benefits, for example in Jūrmala, Daugavpils and Mārupe.
