The car used in the robbery of the Old Riga watch shop was equipped with number plates stolen from another car in Rīga a few weeks ago, State Police Chief Armands Ruks told TV3’s “900 Seconds” in an interview on 9 May.
On the afternoon of 29 April, the exclusive watch shop “Baltic Watches” was robbed in the Old Town using firearms or similar objects.
According to the information available to the police, the perpetrators crossed the Akmens Bridge in a dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf 5 with stolen registration plates.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident.
LETA verified in the Road Traffic Safety Directorate’s database that the number plate KH2412, which, according to publicly released image,s was attached to the Volkswagen Golf 5 used in the robbery, was in fact registered to a Nissan Almera, which had failed its roadworthiness test and had been removed from the registry.
Ruks once again said in an interview with TV3 that the robbers had prepared for this crime quite thoroughly. The law enforcement authorities have a rough idea of the criminals’ route of travel and their motives after the theft, but the analysis of the large amount of seized footage is still ongoing. “Other types of investigations are also ongoing. There are certain leads where we have to work,” the police chief said.
