Rail Baltica infrastructure project at Rīga airport completed

The project for the Rail Baltica station and related infrastructure at Riga International Airport has been completed, said project implementer Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas (EDL) November 3.

The Rail Baltica line is planned to connect the capitals of the Baltic States once every two hours. Every 30 minutes, a shuttle train will connect the airport and Central Station in Riga. It will allow travelers to get from the airport in the capital’s center in 10 minutes. The Rail Baltica line is also intended to be used for regional traffic in Latvia.

Designer association “Prosiv” responsible for the airport project integrated international and local competence: “Sintagma” (Italy), “Prodex” (Slovakia) and “Vector T” (Latvia).

The Rail Baltica station and infrastructure project at the airport includes the construction of a three-level station. The first or ground level provides convenient access to the station and airport complex: new access routes, car and bicycle parking areas, ladders, escalators and elevators to reach other floors of the station, as well as a  green corridor  for passengers: an area for free passenger movement from both the airport terminal and those arriving at the airport.

On the second floor of the station,  passenger waiting rooms, ticket machines and information stands will be located, but on the third floor there will be a stop for the high-speed train and the express from the Riga centre.

In order for the railway to take up less space, the station at Riga airport will be located on a railway estacade with a height of approximately 10 metres.

It is expected that construction work will start in 2021.
