On 11 September 2019 in Riga, political consultations were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Palestine. They were co-chaired by Jānis Mažeiks, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, and Dr Amal Jadou, Deputy Foreign Minister of Palestine. The consultations addressed the current bilateral cooperation issues and developments in the Middle East. The Latvian side confirmed its firm support for a two-state solution in the Middle East Peace Process, to be achieved through direct negotiations.

The Palestinian Assistant Foreign Minister will also meet with officials at the Saeima (Latvian Parliament) as well as delivering a lecture on the state of affairs in the Middle East Peace Process to students at the University of Latvia.

The consultations were arranged in accordance with the Protocol on the Establishment of the Political Consultation Mechanism between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs signed during the visit to Latvia by Riyad Al-Maliki, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Palestine, on 18-19 June 2010. The previous political consultations between Latvia and Palestine took place on 28 February 2016 in Palestine.

Latvia has good and friendly relations with the Palestinian Authority, with the potential for further deepening in various spheres including culture, education and trade.
