Over 1,000 cases of COVID-19 recorded Tuesday in Latvia

Latvia on December 22 recorded 1,004 new cases of COVID-19, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic rising to 32,339 on Tuesday.

This is one of the highest case counts in a single day so far. The highest daily total remains 1,040 cases recorded on December 17.

Of 10,911 tests carried out in the previous 24 hours, 9.8% were positive, down slightly on the 10.6% figure of Monday.

Sixteen more deaths were also confirmed Tuesday. One victim was aged 55-60, two were aged 60-70, five were aged 70-80, six were aged 80-90, one was aged 90-95.

So far 459 people have died from the coronavirus in Latvia since the start of the pandemic.

According to the National Health Service (NVD), the number of people being treated in hospital for coronavirus symptoms is nearly at the 1,000 mark. 998 people are being treated of whom 50 are exhibiting serious symptoms.

All three Baltic states continue to battle the virus. On December 22,  Estonia reported      567 new cases of coronavirus and five deaths, while  Lithuania remains one of the hardest-hit   countries in Europe with 1,871 new cases and highest daily death count so far of 54 confirmed Tuesday.

The number for medical emergencies is  113 , the number for enquiring about a COVID-19 test if you have developed some potential symptoms after returning from overseas or being in contact with someone confirmed as having coronavirus is  8303 .

All arrivals (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website  covidpass.lv  .
