Opposition to request Latvian Prime Minister’s resignation

Opposition deputy Aldis Gobzems (Law and Order) has collected the necessary signatures to request the resignation of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity), according to Gobzems’ Facebook entry April 8.

“[The request] will be submitted to the Saeima Presidium today to be included in the agenda of the Saeima meeting. The request for resignation is related to failure to fulfill Saeima decisions and laws. I shall remind that failure to comply with Saeima decisions and laws is subject to criminal responsibility.”

The Saeima Rules of Procedure stipulate that ten Member signatures are needed to submit an expression of distrust in the Prime Minister.

The request is signed by Law and Order faction members Aldis Gobzems, Jūlija Stepaņenko, Karina Sprūde, and Ļubova Švecova, as well as members of the Union of Greens and Farmers Viktors Valainis, Armands Krauze, Edgars Tavars, Uldis Augulis, Jānis Dūklavs, and Janīna Jalinska.

Opposition politician Aldis Gobzems is known for his populistic stance, high activity on social media, especially regarding  controversial views on Covid-19 restrictions.
