On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, a new and visceral exhibition opens at the Latvian War Museum.

Dubbed ‘Anatomy of war: the value of human life’, the exhibition examines the evolving role of medics in armed conflict.

“The destructive nature of war remains the same, regardless of era or place. War destroys cities and countries, relations between nations, cultural monuments and the environment. Sooner or later the ages heal all these damages, but the human lives lost in the war, the mutilated bodies and the drained souls remain forever,” says advance publicity material.

“Even in the darkest times of war, the value of human life continues to be affirmed by the tireless work and hopeful selflessness of medical personnel.”

Located in the basement of the landmark Swedish-era Pulvertonis (Powder tower), exhibition materials will include prostheses, medicines, surgical instruments, medics’ memoirs and historical photographs.
