Nearly 600 new Covid-19 cases in Latvia Saturday

On Saturday, March 6, Latvia recorded 595 new cases of Covid-19, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 90,009.

Of 12,859 tests carried out in the last 24 hours, 4.6% were positive, nearly the same as the 4.7% ratio the day before. 4% is regarded as the threshold rate at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants dropped rather sharply from 491 Friday to 466.5 Saturday. The last time this figure was this low was December 15, 2020. Anything over 200 is classed as a “very high risk” pandemic situation under the government’s four-stage “traffic light” system.

Unfortunately seven more deaths were also confirmed March 6. One victim was aged 60-69, three were aged 70-79, and three were aged 80-89.

A total of 1,673 people have now died in Latvia as a result of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic according to  official statistics  . 

The National Health Service (NVD) said that on March 5, 4,288 people received a first vaccination dose while 138 received a second dose. 

In all 63,042 people have received a first dose and 17,956 have received two doses.

On March 5   Lithuania  reported 450 new cases of coronavirus and 10 deaths. Lithuania’s 14-day coronavirus infection rate currently stands at 242.8 per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile    Estonia r  emains hardest-hit with 1,542 cases confirmed during the last 24 hours. Seven deaths were also registered and its 14-day cumulative morbidity rate stands at 1253.7 cases per 100,000 of population.

Use of nose and mouth coverings is compulsory in all public places indoors, including workplaces, and there are restrictions on what goods can be bought from stores. Physical distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitary cleaning habits are encouraged.

The current  state of emergency   runs until April 6.

All arrivals to the country (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website  covidpass.lv  . Until April 6, entry to Latvia is only allowed for the reasons listed  in our other story     .   

Since January 15 arrivals have needed to show  a negative Covid-19 test   from a maximum 72 hours before arrival.
