More than 1,000 new Covid-19 cases on Friday in Latvia

On Friday, May 7, Latvia recorded more than 1,000 new cases of Covid-19 infection for the first time since February 20.

1,036 new cases of Covid-19 were registered during the previous 24 hours, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 122,545.

Of 18,511 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 5.6% were positive, up on the 3.2% rate the day before and above the 4% rate that is regarded as the threshold at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose substantially from 416.6 Thursday to 435.1 Friday in what is increasingly looking like another surge in infection rates. Anything over 200 is classed as a “very high risk” pandemic situation under the government’s four-stage “traffic light” system.

Unfortunately nineteen more deaths were also confirmed Friday, taking the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 2,197.

Meanwhile in  Estonia 383 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed Friday (with 8.3% of tests conducted proving positive) and    Lithuania endured another day with more than 1,200 new cases recorded.
