Memorable win for young Latvian hockey stars

The World Junior Hockey Championship has begun in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, with the participation of the Latvian Under-20 national team, where their first match was a sensational win over the hosts.

The hot favorite home team was defeated 3:2 in a shootout.

Latvian goal tender Linards Feldbergs was recognized as the best player in the Latvian ranks, putting in a superb display and recording more than 50 saves during the match – a performance which, unfortunately, was not relected in the game highlights above.

After the victory, Latvian national team head coach Artis Ābols praised his goaltender and all the players for their selflessness.

“I take my hat off to every player and I’m proud of them. They can be proud – it’s truly historic. In this arena, where there are more than 18 thousand spectators, to beat Canada, and the Latvian anthem was playing here – I will say that my eyes were almost wet,” Ābols told the Latvian Hockey Federation.

The two points earned for the victory will not mean anything in the tournament if we fail to score at least two more points in the group, so we must prepare for the next game on Saturday against the USA, added Ābols.

In the next game on Saturday evening at 10:30 PM Latvian time, they will have to compete with the current world champions, the United States.
