Lithuanian police deploy anti-terror squad after man kills officer and flees

An armed man has killed one and injured another police officer in the village of Birbiliškės in Lithuania’s northwestern Mažeikiai District, and fled.

“Police Commissioner General Renatas Požela is expressing the deepest condolences to the family of the killed officer on behalf of the whole police community,” the police said.

A male police officer, aged 40, was killed and a female officer was shot in the leg. Her condition is stable.

According to the Police Department, the police officers were checking information on a violent man and came under fire when they arrived at his house.

The suspect, born in 1968, fled to the nearby forest and might be armed, the police said, urging people to avoid contact with the man and inform the police as soon as he is spotted.

High number of officers and members of the Lithuanian Police Anti-Terrorist Operations Unit ARAS have been sent to Telšiai, Klaipėda and Šiauliai regions.

Lithuania’s police commissioner general, Rentas Požėla, and Interior Minister Rita Tamašunienė are on their way to western Lithuania.

Laura Valauskienė, spokeswoman for the Fire and Rescue Department, told BNS firefighters are now trying to extinguish the fire in a wooden house at the scene. She confirmed that firefighters faced an armed person at the site. The Emergency Response Center received a call about the incident at 10:28. Police officers, firefighters and medics are working at the site.
