To commemorate the passing of director Roze Stiebra (1942-2024), one of the founders of Latvian animation, the National Film Center (NKC) has created a selection of 16 films (1973-2018) available on the filmas.lv  portal in Latvia as of December 24 – a small part of the director’s contribution to the history of Latvian drawn animation.

The NKC noted that director Roze Stiebra is one of the most important personalities in the history of Latvian animation, with a creative career spanning almost 60 years and almost 70 films in formats ranging from two-minute shorts to feature-length films.

Roze Stiebra established two-dimensional animation in Latvia while working for the Latvian Television creative association Telefilma-Riga.

This period is represented by three of the oldest short films –  Ringlas ceļojums   (1973), based on the fairy tale “Ringla the Gypsy Girl” (1939) by Ēriks Ādamsons; the director’s first musical film  Zelta sietiņš (   1975), based on songs by Imants Kalniņš and the ensemble Menuets with poetry by Rainis; and perhaps the most legendary film by Roze Stiebra,  Zaķīšu pirtiņa (  1979), with which several generations of viewers have grown up.

Feature animations, such as an alternative look at the Loch Ness Monster,  Ness un Nesija   (1991) are also available.

You can view the selection on  filmas.lv.

Correction: The film selection is not available worldwide, as stated previously. It is available in the territory of Latvia.
