Diplomat: Why Latvia wants a seat on the UN Security Council

Share

As previously reported by LSM, Latvia has for several years been pondering how to gain a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and for the last year has been actively pursuing that goal.

Spearheading that campaign is   Latvia’s permanent representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, who spoke to Latvian Radio’s Artjoms Konohovs about why Latvia’s diplomatic service is so keen on the idea and what ot would mean if successful.

The UNSC consists of 15 countries. Five of them are permanent members, while another 10 are elected for a two-year term from different regions of the world. In the event of a positive vote, Latvia’s representatives will serve on the UN Security Council from 2026 to 2028.
