In Latvia last week, a total of 3,448 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed, which is 28.9% more than in the previous week, according to information submitted to the government by the Ministry of Health (VM).
Assessing last week’s cases of Covid-19 and the vaccination status of infected people, 2,738 people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed a course of vaccination, representing a total of 81% of all cases last week, compared with 629 people (19%) who had been vaccinated, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).
Coronavirus is 2.9 times more common in completely unvaccinated people than in fully vaccinated people.
Last week, 19 patients died of Covid-19 in Latvia. None of them had been vaccinated against Covid-19. In August, 22 people died of Covid-19, 20 of whom had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or completed a vaccination course, but two of whom had been vaccinated (in the age groups 80-90 and 60-70 with pre-existing chronic conditions), according to the information gathered by the Ministry of Health.
VM information shows that in 393 or 11.6% of positive cases of Covid-19, coronovirus was confirmed as a result of screening of educational staff and students. This is 12% more than in the previous week, when 351 cases were confirmed (13.1% of the total). 2,974 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the rest of the population, which is 28% more than in the previous week.
Between August 24 and September 19, out of a total of 2,535 Covid-19 cases, 1,043 Covid-19 cases were detected in children aged 10 to 14 years. This is followed by 873 cases among young people aged 15 to 19 years. 619 cases of Covid-19 were detected in the 6-9 year age group.
In total, 9,442 cases of Covid-19 were registered among the employees and students of educational institutions between 24 August and 19 September. Of these, 1,138 (12%) cases were detected as a result of screening.
The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate in Latvia per 100,000 population increased rapidly, reaching 319.1 on 19 September from 182.1 a week earlier.
The number of inpatient virus patients also registered an increase of 41%, following a 35% increase last week.
Last week, an average of 31 patients with severe symptoms were treated in hospital every day.
Assessing the incidence of Covid-19 by age group, it can be seen that the most rapid increase in coronavirus infection in recent weeks has been in the age group up to 14 years, as well as from 15 to 49 years.
