Covid case total increases by 659

On Tuesday, May 11, Latvia recorded 659 new cases of Covid-19 infection. The new cases of Covid-19 were registered during the previous 24 hours, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 124,960.

Of 17,957 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 3.7% were positive, down on the 5.9% rate the day before and just below the 4% rate that is regarded as the threshold at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose again slightly from 459.5 Monday to 462.8 Tuesday. Anything over 200 is classed as a “very high risk” pandemic situation under the government’s four-stage “traffic light” system.

Four more deaths were also confirmed Tuesday, taking the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 2,217.

Meanwhile in  Estonia 359 new cases were confirmed Tuesday while in  Lithuania 1,226 cases were confirmed.

Use of nose and mouth coverings is compulsory in all public places indoors, including workplaces. Physical distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitary cleaning habits are encouraged.

There is a Latvian language hotline  8989  which allows people to both register for vaccination and receive answers to questions about the process of vaccination.
