COVID-19 case total rises by nearly 400 on Monday in Latvia

Latvia on December 21 recorded 395 new cases of COVID-19, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic rising to 31,335 on Monday.

The highest daily total remains 1,040 cases recorded on December 17. Monday’s figures are usually the lowest of the week due to a smaller number of tests being carried out on Sundays.

Of 3,730 tests carried out in the previous 24 hours, 10.6% were positive, down slightly on the 11.6% figure of Sunday.

Unfortunately, four more deaths were also confirmed Monday. One victim was aged 55-60, one was aged 65-70 and two were aged 80-85.

So far 443 people have died from the coronavirus in Latvia since the start of the pandemic.

According to the National Health Service (NVD), the number of people being treated in hospital for coronavirus symptoms is approaching the 1,000 mark. 983 people are being treated of whom 56 are exhibiting serious symptoms.

All three Baltic states continue to battle the virus. On December 21,  Estonia reported      287 new cases of coronavirus and seven deaths, while  Lithuania remains one of the hardest-hit   countries in Europe with 2,130 new cases and 20 deaths confirmed Monday.
