Celebrate New Year responsibly, rescue services urge

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) and the State Police (VP) urge people to celebrate the New Year responsibly and to avoid drinking alcohol, the services said in a statement.

The services urge people to buy fireworks only from certified shops and to observe all safety rules when using them. The noise from fireworks often causes alarm and fear to animals, so it is important to ensure that pets are not left alone and are in a safe and supervised environment, the services noted.

The services urge people to avoid getting behind the wheel of a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants during the holidays. Walking under the influence can be just as dangerous on the road, especially when walking on the side of the road without reflectors.

When leaving home, it is important to lock the front door and close windows and balcony doors, the services stressed. The services encourage people to ask their most trusted neighbors to keep an eye on their homes and to tell them to call the police immediately if they see suspicious cars or people watching other people’s property.

The services encourage everyone to download the “112 Latvija” app on their smart device. Using the app, you can make a call and send a structured SMS to the 112 contact center, as well as view safety tips on the “112.lv” website.

If there is a danger to life, health, safety, the environment, or property, call 112 immediately.
