The Open Creative Centre has launched the “Don’t Start!” campaign, encouraging young people not to start smoking. This campaign reminds people: it is easier not to start than to try to quit later.
Edijs Klaišis, head of Open Creative Centre, told Latvian Television’s “Morning Panorama” programme on 16 April that the campaign was launched because “smoking is now more dangerous than it has ever been, for a very simple reason – we have an illegal market where you can buy miracles . Things with unidentifiable composition, unknown origin. I believe that smoking is more dangerous now than it has ever been. If one person doesn’t start because of the campaign, it was worth it.”
The campaign’s approach – don’t be scared of what happens if you smoke, emphasise what happens if you don’t. By not smoking, young people will save money. They will have better health, appearance and well-being, and less risk of becoming addicted, the campaign emphasises.
There are many reasons why young people start smoking, one of the most popular being to socialise. This campaign reminds people that it is easier not to start than to try to quit later.
The campaign “Don’t start!” will be visible in the city and on e-klase.lv. Posters will feature the word “DON’T START!”, made of cigarette butts and e-cigarettes. A QR code will also be placed next to the sign, which will take you to an information page .
The Open Creative Centre provides help and support to young people in need. It has set up centres, temporary accommodation and safe havens in several cities across Latvia.
