The American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia ( AmCham ) said April 4 it was launching “an educational initiative to help its members navigate the evolving trade landscape” following the imposition of unprecedented tariffs worldwide by US President Donald Trump.
On April 2, in a bizarre and grandiose ceremony at the White House, President Trump announced the imposition of a 20% tariff on most imports from the EU, following the earlier announcement of even higher tariffs on certain other items such as cars.
“For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far, both friend and foe alike,” the American President said as he unveiled a long list of tariffs apparently based on discontent about the fact that America – like many countries – runs trade deficits with many other countries.
“You think of the European Union – very friendly – they rip us off. It’s so sad to see. It’s so pathetic,” Trump said as he waved a large chart containing his tariff list, before making the claim that Europe charges a 39% tariff to American companies, which it does not.
“AmCham Latvia stands with other AmChams in Europe in advocating for free and fair trade, emphasizing the need to resolve trade disputes through dialogue and cooperation,” said AmCham.
“While initial estimates suggest a limited direct impact on Latvia’s exports, the broader effects of supply chain disruptions across various industries could be substantial. To support its members, AmCham is launching an educational initiative to help its members navigate the evolving trade landscape,” said AmCham without giving any details of what the initiative includes.
“Negotiating and reaching a balanced agreement that preserves the benefits of transatlantic trade and investment is essential. AmCham remains committed to fostering a favorable trade environment, supporting open dialogue, and strengthening transatlantic ties to ensure lasting prosperity for businesses and communities on both sides,” said AmCham.
