On Tuesday, September 21, Latvia recorded 494 new cases of Covid-19 infection, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).
Of the total number of positive cases, 384 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 110 were fully vaccinated.
The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 151,243.
Of 24,518 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 2 % were positive.
The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 323.1 Monday to 332.8 Tuesday, keeping morbidity well into the ‘dark red’ or ‘very high’ risk classification, the highest of the four alert categories under the ‘traffic light’ system.
Of even more concern than the rising morbidity was news of 13 more Covid-related deaths confirmed Tuesday. This is the largest daily death toll since 15 deaths were recorded on June 10. The youngest of those who died was in the 10-19 years age bracket. Two more were aged 40-49, four were aged 70-79 and six were aged 80-89.
The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,658.
There are currently 351 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 44 are displaying serious symptoms.
Meanwhile, in Estonia there were 5 deaths and 463 new Covid cases , and in Lithuania 1,155 new coronavirus infections and 18 deaths from Covid-19 were recorded over the past 24 hours as the country moved into its ‘black zone’.
